En el año 2013, pinté este cuadro. Tenía entre mis manos una fotografía de un velero surcando el mar abierto, y con ella, una emoción profunda que venía de mucho antes: el amor por el océano, la libertad que sus horizontes prometen, el anhelo de un día zarpar en mi propio velero, siguiendo el ritmo del viento y el susurro de las olas.

Fue mi pintura más realista, un verdadero desafío técnico y emocional. Cada trazo con óleo sobre tela era una conversación con ese deseo profundo de navegar, de ser viento y agua a la vez. El velero de la imagen no era solo un barco, era una metáfora de lo que quería construir: un espacio de libertad compartida, una vida navegada con amor.

Recuerdo cuando se la mostré a mi ex pololo. Él también soñaba con vivir en el mar. En aquel tiempo compartimos el mismo sueño: una vida flotante, sin anclas que ataran al cemento ni a la rutina. Él lo logró, hoy vive en un velero junto a su mejor amigo. Yo, en cambio, aún sigo en tierra, con mi sueño resguardado en el lienzo.

El año pasado estuvimos cerca. Soñamos juntos un proyecto de charter en un velero más grande. Yo estudié online para obtener mi licencia internacional de navegación, y ya contaba con mi licencia chilena de capitán de bahía. Teníamos mapas, nombres, rutas. Teníamos ilusión. Pero la energía no fluyó. Faltó el viento, o quizás la sincronía.

Hoy ese amor se siente lejano, como una isla que alguna vez divisamos en el horizonte y que lentamente se borró en la niebla. Pero este cuadro sigue aquí, testigo silencioso de mis sueños. Me recuerda que lo soñado no se pierde, solo navega en otra dimensión del tiempo, quizás aguardando una nueva marea.

A veces pienso que pintar este velero fue una forma de navegar sin moverme. De declararle al universo mi deseo de libertad. Tal vez un día vuelva ese viento. Tal vez no. Pero lo importante es que una parte de mí ya zarpó.

Y sigue navegando.

 Sails in the Wind: A Dream Still Sailing

In 2013, I painted this piece. I held in my hands a photo of a sailboat cutting through the open sea, and with it, a deep emotion that had lived in me for much longer: a love for the ocean, for the freedom its horizons promise, and the longing to one day sail my own boat, following the rhythm of the wind and the whisper of the waves.

It became my most realistic painting, a true technical and emotional challenge. Each stroke of oil on canvas was a conversation with that profound desire to sail, to become wind and water at once. The sailboat wasn’t just a boat, it was a metaphor for what I wanted to create: a space of freedom, shared love, and a life carried by the currents.

I remember showing it to my ex-boyfriend. He too dreamed of living at sea. Back then, we shared the same vision: a floating life, free from the weight of cement and routine. He made it. He lives on a sailboat now with his best friend. I, on the other hand, remain on land, my dream preserved within the canvas.

Last year, we were close. We dreamed together of launching a charter business with a larger sailboat. I even studied online to earn an international sailing license, already holding my Chilean coastal captain’s license. We had maps, names, routes. We had hope. But the energy didn’t flow. The wind didn’t come, or perhaps, our timing was off.

Today, that love feels far away, like an island we once glimpsed on the horizon, slowly fading into the mist. But this painting remains, a quiet witness to my dreams. It reminds me that what is dreamed is never lost. It just sails on a different current of time, perhaps waiting for a new tide.

Sometimes I think that painting this sailboat was my way of sailing without moving. A declaration to the universe of my yearning for freedom. Maybe the wind will return one day. Maybe it won’t. But what matters is that a part of me already set sail.

And is still out there, sailing.
